Understanding Energy Policy: A Uniting Church conversation
We’re hearing a lot about energy this election - solar and wind, gas, nuclear and more. A lot of claims get made, but it can hard to judge which stack up and which don’t.
We’re hearing a lot about energy this election - solar and wind, gas, nuclear and more. A lot of claims get made, but it can hard to judge which stack up and which don’t.
As Christians, we’re called to seek truth and to work (and vote) not just for our own interests but the interest of others- the common good.
This online forum, hosted by the National Assembly and Uniting Climate, is designed for Uniting Church members and friends who want to think deeply and faithfully about the energy choices we face this federal election. Together, we’ll learn more about the major parties' policies, how they compare, and their implications for an effective energy system, the cost of living, and the health of our environment and stability of our climate.
In the first part of the forum, we’ll be reminded that engagement in the political process is not only an important right, but also a significant responsibility. As Christians we are called to respond thoughtfully to the issues of our time - voting with care and conscience is part of how we live our faith in action.
In the second part of the forum we will hear from Dr Brad Smith, Policy and Advocacy Director of the Nature Conservation Council of NSW and an electrical engineer by training. Brad will help us explore some key questions about energy policy including:
- How does the energy system work and why are my bills so high?
- What are the major parties proposing and how realistic are they?
- What are the implications of those policies, for
- Our future energy system
- The cost of living – now and later
- Our environment and the impacts of climate change
There will also be time for your questions.
The Understanding Energy Policy forum will take place on Monday, April 28th from 7.00pm – 8.30pm.
You can register to be part of it here.

“Like all citizens in a democratic state, Christians have a responsibility to actively engage in the political processes of their country. As Christians, however, we have a particular responsibility to think about how we do this in a way that answers the call to be good news in the world…..” Your Faith, Your Voice, Your Vote.
